Roodepoort at a glance
Roodepoort is located on the border of Johannesburg and the West Rand, with superb views of the city to the east, and the Magaliesberg mountain range to the west. Roodepoort (meaning “red valley” in Afrikaans after the red soil found in this area) dates back to 1884, when Fred Struben discovered gold in the area at what he called the Confidence Reef, demonstrating his confidence in this mine’s gold-bearing potential. The Confidence Reef was declared a national monument in 1983, and is situated in the Kloofendal Nature Reserve. The gold found at Wilgespruit did not last long but it brought a lot of attention to the Witwatersrand and caused prospectors to flock to the area, searching for more. Mining activities in this area have all but stopped and no longer play a significant role in the local economy.
Roodepoort is now a mix of residential suburbs, agricultural holdings, mining in the south, industrial parks and some commercial activity in the form of Westgate, Constantia, Laser Park and Clear Water Mall. Roodepoort is accessible by several main arterial routes, namely 14th Avenue, Hendrik Potgieter Road, Christiaan de Wet Road and the N1 National highway. The area is also accessible via bus, metered and minibus taxis and private car. The world-class Gautrain (commuter rail system) does not yet reach Roodepoort, but there are plans for it to be extended to this region in the foreseeable future.
Attractions and Amenities
From humble beginnings, Roodepoort has grown into a large residential, commercial and industrial node with many attractive and well-established suburbs. Of these, Laser Park, Honeydew, Stormill and Robertville would be of most interest to those looking to invest in industrial property.
Being so large and diverse, Roodepoort has much to offer by way of residential areas, entertainment, and a whole variety of amenities. There is a museum, a theatre, many shopping centres, hospitals, restaurants and golf courses. Many Johannesburg residents consider the city's finest park to be the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden. There are many education facilities in each suburb of Roodepoort, including primary and high schools, as well as Monash University which is located in Ruimsig. Despite being able to offer everything needed for a fast-paced city life, Roodepoort also boasts proximity to nature and the bushveld, as well as the world-famous Cradle of Humankind, renowned as the place where humankind originated, and one of eight South African World Heritage Sites.
